Baby Announcement Function

In fact, I was not in favor of my wife’s idea to have 30th day celebration of our baby boy. Perhaps I would have had promised her to have this event organized when I started dating her about many years back. Gals tend to remember every oral assurance given to them in whatever state of mind.

After our baby’s birth, I was not serious towards 16th day celebration (meant for Periatchi Padayal) but my wife had all the plans what to purchase, who all to be invited, what to wear etc. As usual, I reached home after office work to take part (?) in that event. All was well. We had all our accessible relatives gathered, prepared a swing with my wife’s wedding saree suspended by a bamboo pole and swung by Aunties (my wife’s sis-in-law). Also in the other corner there were lighted kaamatchi amman lamps and a set of kuthuvilakku against an empty wall. A spread of chicken thighs, heap of rice, cigar and a small bottle of whisky were there in front of the lamps in a long plantain leaf. Also found two whole raw chicken cut into 4 pieces each. After the padayal (Pooja) was over, ladies shared the food-spread among themselves within the confinement of the room leaving the raw chicken as it is.

By the time, the ladies announced that the event is over, we indulged ourselves in a retreat for our stomach full with Rice, Chicken Curry, Salads etc.

I thought that is all of it. But my wife disapproved of me again, by saying that she is looking forward for 30th day celebration in a little grander manner although she could not explain me why it should be there. But she was not convinced enough by my long explanations rather clarifications. At last, I had to convince myself saying that we have to do a Baby Announcement Function on 30th day.

First of all we decided on the date to be on some weekend close to 30th day of birth. We decided clearly to have it outside so that we will have less work in terms of preparing our home and food.

At last Anjappar Restaurant was not having any function on that evening. I am a kind of happy that we managed to book the function hall with one of the most authenticated chettinaadu type of cuisine in Singapore.

We were thinking of hosting the function with a theme. After combing through internet, we came up with an Idea to make it like Kavi Varman is expressing his happiness and thankfulness to the guests.

This way we worked out to decorate the center floor with “I am happy to see you all – Kavi Varman“. Good work done by Nandhini using thermocol. We also prepared thanking note signboards and placed in all every tables (See pic). And our last minute Balloons also came up with a fine-tuning touch.

We carried the Baby Cot (gifted by Kamala) to the venue and decorated with silk ribbons and soft toys. It looked awesome when Kavi Varman is napping in it.

Guests started arriving… First one of my invitees is Mr Kiru and his family. I am so thankful for him, not just for attending but arriving in time. Hardly we find Indians sticking with time.

I am disappointed when Amit called me at 8.00pm and asked me to guide him from Mustafa to the venue. I had to heed to his request, but even in that gap I didn’t miss to advise him not to ask similarly in similar situations.

The great disappointment came from Joseph, who himself volunteered to take video coverage of the event. I was so appreciative of him in fact he deserves that. Much to confirm his commitment, he himself called me exactly one hour before the event and said that he is starting and would be there at 7.30. I shot for a while before the arrival of guests, after which I totally forgot that activity. I could not also remember, when I was asked by Iniyan to deliver few words to the crowd.

My wife and I made a short and sweet announcement to the guests and invited collectively to help them with dinner.

Then came our perspiring video volunteer with wasim. Wasim was cool as usual. Joseph immediately pulled out the camera and started zooming at the crowd for a while before he settled down for dinner with George, his wife, Amit, Lakshmi.

When the event comes to a close, I forced the Handy cam in the hands of Canagaraj. He literally turned around the camera up, down, left and right with no patience. May be he had just seen the movie Pudhu Pettai.

All is well! We took a cab back home after dismantling the Baby Cot and little other stuff.
